What is Exproof? What Standards Is It Subject To?
What is Ex-Proof?
Exproof is a technology that ensures the safe operation of electrical devices used in explosive atmospheres without causing explosions. Explosive atmospheres are environments containing flammable gases, vapors, dust or fibres. Explosions may occur when using electrical devices in these environments. Exproof devices are devices that can be operated in these environments and are specially designed to prevent explosions.
The design and production of ex-proof devices are subject to ATEX (European) and NEC (North American) standards. These standards specify the classification of explosive atmospheres, classification of devices and compliance requirements. Exproof devices are designed and tested in accordance with these standards.
Exproof devices are specifically designed for different types of devices used in explosive environments. These devices include lamps, motors, switches, connectors, sensors and other electrical devices. The design, production and testing of ex-proof devices are carried out in accordance with the requirements of the standards.
Exproof technology ensures the safety of employees and the environment by ensuring the safe operation of electrical devices used in explosive environments.
In many industrial branches dealing with flammable, combustible and explosive substances such as petroleum, petroleum products, chemicals, LPG, natural gas, coal mines, grain silos, sugar factories, timber and furniture factories, bread bakeries and factories, such as normal operation or malfunction and maintenance. In such situations (due to gas, dust, or flammable material vapor), an explosive atmosphere is formed. Sparks and arcs produced by electrical appliances endanger these environments and cause explosions.
For these reasons, the electrical appliances used in explosive environments of such workplaces must be different. This phenomenon is called ex-proof and the electrical devices used are called ex-proof electrical products. In short, they are known by these names in the commercial market.
In fact, the term EX-PROOF is taken from the American practice and in Turkish it should be "EXPLOSIVE ATTEMPES and ELECTRICAL DEVICES USED IN EXPLOSIVE ENVIRONMENTS". The term "EXPLOSION PROTECTED" can also be used instead of EXPROOF.
